Intensive Engagement

If you’ve had a chance to walk through Hawken's Upper School this month, you probably noticed that the traditional classroom has undergone a transformation.

In Kennedy Auditorium, students practiced stage combat under the tutelage of a Great Lakes theatre actor; in the gym, students presented workshops for Lower and Middle School students about cultural identifiers in their Leadership through Diversity intensive; in the physics lab, students presented to parent and friends their simple machine design experiments, which ranged from electric art work to a hydrostatic generator to a working model of a Dance Dance Revolution Video Pad; in the world language department, students conducted interviews entirely in Spanish with native speakers; and in the Humanities wing, students practiced their monologue projects, which were based on a partnership with Tri-C ESL immigrant students.

Intensive classes take place not only on Hawken’s main campus but at various locations throughout Cleveland and around the globe. This term, off-campus excursions include a 3-day trip to Nashville for “Music Playlist: The Americas;” volunteering at various service sites around Cleveland for “Homelessness;” a two-week excursion at the Island School at Cape Eleuthera Institute in the Bahamas; and a three-day Student Diversity Leadership Conference held in Tampa.
