Debate Team Wins Two of Three Championships at Prestigious Minneapple Tournament

The Hawken Debate Team made school history last weekend at the Minneapple Tournament in Minneapolis, MN through impressive performances in both Public Forum and Congressional Debate.

In Congressional Debate, senior Phillip Hedayatnia was named tournament champion and was also selected by his peers as the winner of the Leadership Award. This is a repeat championship for Phillip, building upon his 2014 Minneapple Championship. Teammate Nayan Rao ’17 placed 6th in Congressional Debate, earning his second bid to the Tournament of Champions to complete his qualification for the tournament.

In Public Forum Debate, Ozan Ergungor ’17 and Ammar Lone ’17 were crowned tournament champions, marking a first-ever Public Forum Championship for Hawken at the Minneapple Tournament. Teammates James Swingos ’16 and Josef Horwath ’17 advanced to Double Octafinals, losing a close 2-1 decision.

Debate coaches Mr. Bob Shurtz and Mr. Chase Williams were thrilled with the outcome, commenting, “This was a historic weekend. We are so proud of these students for their spectacular performance that led them to two of the three tournament championships.”
