Hawken Junior Places Second at AIPNO Research Showcase

Congratulations to Seysha Mehta ’17, who was awarded the second place prize at the Association of Indian Physicians of Northern Ohio (AIPNO) 3rd Annual Research Showcase, held on October 24th at the Cleveland Convention Center. Given that Seysha was the only high school student presenter in a field of medical student, residents, physicians, and nurses, this was quite an accomplishment.

Seysha presented a poster on her STEMM project, “Potential Impact of Wearable Device Data on Assessment of Patients with Heart Failure.” Part of Hawken’s Science Research III class, Seysha’s research was conducted over the summer under the mentorship of Dr. James Young, the executive dean of the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and a world-renowned expert at the Kaufmann Heart Failure Center.

Heart failure has one of the highest mortality rates of any other medical condition in the U.S. Doctors typically use the New York Heart Association’s (NYHA) classification system, which is based primarily on subjective data, to guide their recommendations for treating the condition. Because the NYHA’s classification is based on very subjective data, Seysha explored the use of a wearable fitness tracker (Microsoft Band) to obtain more objective patient data. This data has proven very helpful to cardiologists and in some cases has led to a reclassification of patients. If borne out by more extensive studies, these findings could revolutionize the research and management of heart failure.

Seysha was thrilled that her project was selected, and she is extremely grateful for the support of her mentors. “Getting to see the meaningful research projects of so many people was inspiring,” she comments. “Talking about my research and answering questions from the audience and judges made me realize how much I’ve done and learned over the summer.”

Seysha, along with other Hawken STEMM students, will be presenting her research again at the annual Bob Maciunas Hawken STEMM Symposium, which will take place on Monday, November 16 at the Gates Mills campus.
