Debaters Excel at Tournaments in Minneapolis and Cleveland
This weekend, Hawken's debate team competed as a split squad with 12 students joining Mr. Shurtz and Mr. Williams at the 29th Annual MinneApple Debate Tournament in Apple Valley, MN, and 26 students joining Mr. Ingrassia at the Lincoln West Tournament in Cleveland. Hawken students excelled at both, earning some fantastic honors!
At MinneApple:
Junior Phillip Hedayatnia was the tournament champion in Congressional Debate and winner of the Student Leadership Bowl. To win both the tournament and the Leadership Bowl, which is voted on by fellow competitors, is a great honor! By placing in the top-6 at the tournament, Phillip also earned his 3rd bid to the Tournament of Champions.
Seniors Aman Nair and Jack Weisman advanced to the Quarterfinal round in Public Forum Debate, earning their 2nd bid to the Tournament of Champions. By earning their 2nd bid, Aman and Jack have completed their qualification to the TOC and will be representing Hawken at the tournament in May 2015.
Senior Aman Nair was the top speaker in Public Forum Debate, earning 179 speaker points out of a possible 180.
Juniors Devesh Modi and James Swingos advanced to the Double Octafinal round in Public Forum Debate, just missing their first bid to the Tournament of Champions.
At Lincoln West:
Junior Michael Gerace placed 6th, and Ssnior Yvana Petros placed 5th in International Extemp.
Senior Alison Jin was the tournament champion in Original Oratory.
Senior Max Schachere and fresman Sauren Khosla were the tournament champions in Public Forum Debate. Sophomores Ozan Ergungor and Josef Horwath placed 6th in Public Forum.
Junior Elisabeth Blossom placed 3rd and senior Larry Fulton was the tournament champion in Congressional Debate.
The outstanding performance by all members of the team helped Hawken bring home the 4th Place Team Sweepstakes Award. The debate team now turns their focus to the Chagrin Falls tournament next weekend.
