At Busy Summer at Gries

Hawken's Gries Center at University Circle was teaming with activity this summer, being used by Hawken School as well as area organizations.

In June, "Fresh Camp" held a 1-week urban gardening and hip hop music production camp for Glenville students. Cleveland Leadership Center's Summer Leadership Academy held their program at Gries for the 4th year. And Next Step: Strategies for Business Growth, a University Circle, Inc. program with CSU for local entrepreneurs, held their monthly evening sessions at Gries. Hawken used the Gries Center for events such as a Middle School grade level coordinators retreat, STEMM Pathways seminars, summer Passport Camps, Parade the Circle staging, and a Summer Solstice pre-party.

In July, Hawken's Gries Center Director Sara Mierke facilitated a social entrepreneurship workshop for the Cleveland Council on World Affairs' Iraqi Young Leaders Exchange Program. The World Learning program included guests Monica Nemeth, Shaker Heights HS 2014 graduate and founding Director of Project SAFE (anti-human trafficking); Brandon Chrostowski, Founder and CEO of EDWINS Leadership and Restaurant Institute; and Tori Mills, Founder and Director of Doan Brook Partnership. Twelve Iraqi teens, 7 American teens, and an adult mentor from Iraq attended.

In August, Hawken's Director of Technology Ryan Wooley held a 2-day session for Hawken faculty on Flipping the Classroom. Passport and STEMM sessions continued, and the AffNo and Middle School faculty held retreats.
