Senior Receives Gates Millennium Scholarship

Rebekah Russell '14 has received the coveted Gates Millennium scholarship, a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of her choice.

One of only 1,000 students chosen from 52,000 applicants, Rebekah will use the scholarship funds to attend Case Western Reserve University where she has been accepted into the highly selective 8-year Pre-Professional Scholars Program for Medicine.

College Counselor Renee Bischoff notes, “This is the first time in my college counseling career that I have worked with a student who has won this prestigious award. Rebekah’s work ethic, focus and dedication is remarkable. She has been a standout student at Hawken in the classroom and she has given her time and talent to our community to further both diversity and school spirit. Her poise and grace are evident in all that she does.”

Established in 1999 with the goal of developing Leaders for America’s Future™, the Gates Millennium Scholars Program is funded by a $1.6 billion grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The program is dedicated to removing barriers to education for high-performing, low-income students, and each year enables 5,000 students to attend and graduate debt-free from 800 of the most selective private and public schools in the country.
