From April 24th to April 26th, jazz legend, Michael Henderson visited Hawken to teach and perform with the Hawken Jazz for a combined concert on April 26th.
During his time here, Henderson worked one on one with Chad Komocki, the Director of the Jazz Band, and with the students in the ensemble.
While Henderson worked with the students, Komocki says that, “He was able to break down the grove and make it more precise and more articulate, really giving the band a more professional sound.” Henderson himself said that he was impressed with the jazz band saying, “the Jazz Band here is absolutely fantastic, because they are very focused and energetic.”
The students working with Henderson were very responsive and excited to work with such a living legend. Stephen Pioro ‘15 says that working with Henderson, “was absolutely amazing. He’s a musical genius, and a really dynamic guy who knows how to bring the music to life.”
The concert the Jazz Band played along with Henderson featured Cleveland native singers Stacey Crawford, Andrenée and Randall Priest, and guitarist Jack Whitsett. Throughout the concert, Henderson and the band played pieces that highlighted his solo career, his time in Motown and the Hawken Jazz Band Combo.
