Intensive: Spanish 4 Honors

During Fall Intensives, Spanish 4 Honors students read, wrote, thought and spoke in Spanish for three full weeks.
During this Cleveland-based immersion course, students perfected their ability to understand and express themselves in Spanish through authentic readings, visits with Spanish-speaking professionals, daily writing and cultural immersion. Students explored three main themes: human rights (Chile and Argentina in the 1970s and 1980s), Spanish surrealism (Salvador Dali) and the dynamics of Hispanic families.

Students had the opportunity to interact with representatives from organizations in the Cleveland area that serve the Hispanic population (Esperanza, The Centers for Families and Children, The Domestic Violence Center Latina Project). The class experienced bilingual education at Buhrer Dual Language School by observing a kindergarten class taught in Spanish and interacting with eighth grade students in a Spanish Language Arts class. The course concluded with a cooking finale in which the students chose and prepared (without English) an authentic dish from a Spanish speaking country.

Said one student of the intensive: "I learned that I can think in a different language if I have enough opportunities to speak it."
