Insights Week 2014

When classes resume after Winter Break on January 6, Middle School students will be immersed in five-day interdisciplinary courses composed of students from mixed grade levels.
Born out of the academic passions and expertise of Hawken's faculty, the innovative and engaging courses will use the Cleveland area and beyond as a resource for projects and explorations. Courses are divided into four categories, with the goal that all students take courses in three of the four categories over the course of their Middle School career. Throughout the week, real world experiences and inquiry will strengthened skills of collaboration, synthesis of information, and critical thinking. Below is a list of courses.

Arts
Through these courses, students will have extensive opportunities to take advantage of the full range of artistic opportunities available in Cleveland. In collaboration with individual artists and nonprofit organizations, students’ experiences with the arts will expand.

Engage Cleveland
Through these classes, students will cultivate a deep understanding of our city, what it means to be a responsible neighbor, and how our city’s challenges and successes mirror and are linked to global urban trends. Rooted in Cleveland history, urban studies and the practice of civic engagement, students will engage in academic study and meaningful urban renewal work through sustained relationships with community-based partners.

Global Connections
Through these courses, students will navigate and forge meaningful connections with people from different cultures, countries, and communities. The programs will provide students with learning experiences that will challenge them academically, culturally, physically and ethically, ultimately increasing their global mindedness.

Science and Technology
Through these courses, students explore questions that have global, social, environmental, and health implications in fields related to science, technology, engineering, math and medicine.
