Intensives: Leadership in Diversity

Students in the Upper School "Leadership in Diversity" Intensive traveled to Washington, DC last week for a five day experience that included touring monuments, visiting the Newseum, and attending the Student Diversity Leadership Conference in National Harbor, Maryland.
Hosted by the National Association of Independent Schools, The Student Diversity Leadership Conference is a gathering of upper school student leaders from around the country, where students examine issues of social justice, develop effective cross-cultural communication skills, practice expression through the arts, and learn networking principles and strategies. Now in its 20th year, the conference encourages students to apply the leadership principles they develop within their own communities, which is also a central purpose for the Leadership in Diversity course.

Next week the students will conduct a workshop for 5th graders at the Upper School Campus where they will explore personal identity, how to have conversations around differences, and how to be “upstanders” in difficult situations. The Middle School student council will be attending a similar workshop focusing on leadership qualitites with the goal of taking their knowledge and experiences back to the wider Middle School Community.
