Hawken Announces The Sydell and Arnold Miller Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies

Hawken School is pleased to announce a generous gift from parents Lauren (Hawken Trustee) and Steven Spilman and Stacie and Jeffery Halpern for the establishment of a partnership with Hawken's Entrepreneurial Studies Program. The partnership will be called The Sydell and Arnold Miller Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies in honor of Lauren and Stacie's parents.

The Miller Institute will further develop Hawken’s Entrepreneurial Studies Program, which is unique among independent schools for actively engaging students in partnerships with area entrepreneurs to deepen and elevate the learning experience.

It is fitting that the Institute will carry the Miller name as Hawken’s entrepreneurial curriculum emulates the path Hawken grandparents Sydell and Arnold Miller forged as they built Ardell, Inc., and Matrix Essentials, Inc., which became the leading professional beauty industry company in the U.S.

The goal of the Hawken entrepreneurial program - to empower students to achieve their own success by finding an endeavor they are passionate about and equipping them with the resources to turn that passion into growth - is echoed in the Matrix story, which forever changed the nature of the beauty industry by emphasizing the education, empowerment and encouragement of thousands of salon owners to pursue and achieve their own dreams.

The Hawken-Miller partnership will combine Hawken’s central principles of development of character and intellect through real-world experience, with the Matrix values: think about what you want to accomplish; believe in yourself and your abilities; dream big, accomplish your dreams step by step by step; dare yourself to do it.

Future plans for the Miller Institute include a Fabrication Laboratory at Hawken, where students will be able to collaborate and turn innovative ideas into real working products and designs.
