Hawken Participates in Cultural Festival

Hawken participated in Cleveland's first One World Festival, held on August 25 at the Cleveland Cultural Gardens.
The School's involvement was extensive: faculty were members of the planning committee; Middle School faculty, students and families assisted with cleanup of the American Garden; a joint Middle/Upper School jazz band played as the parade was being staged; Middle School students marched in the parade; four 7th graders sang at the naturalization ceremony; faculty led creative arts projects; and numerous volunteers assisted festival goers throughout the day.  In addition to these activities, five students - Bryce Lewis '14, Matthew Thompson '15, Arianna Marino '15, Sarah Parker '16 and Phillip Hedayatnia '16 - staged a performance of "Antigone" in the Greek garden.

As stated in the Plain Dealer, the festival was
organized by local arts activist James Levin and featured hundreds of ethnic musicians, dancers, displays and food vendors throughout the three-mile long collection of 29-and-growing gardens dedicated to the area's ethnic diversity.

Hawken's involvement in the festival stems from a long-term relationship with the Cultural Gardens that began when the 7th grade adopted the American Cultural Garden in 2008. Over the years students worked to rename the garden, restored and rededicated a bust of Mark Twain, and conducted countless hours of community gardening and outreach. Last spring, unanimous approval by the Cleveland Cultural Federation was given to the students’ Master Conceptual Plan for the American Cultural Garden, which included bringing water access to the garden site.

An estimated 15,000 to 20,000 visitors attended the daylong festival in the gardens, which were founded in 1916 - one year after James A. Hawken founded Hawken School.
