Lower School Expansion Opens
The doors to Hawken's newly renovated and expanded Lower School opened on Sunday, August 18, to looks of delight and awe from the Hawken community.
Not only did the project happen quickly, having started in February of this year, but the end result is a building that is stunning in its functionality and design.
Continuing the look and feel of the Early Childhood Center, the Lower School expansion houses 2nd and 3rd grades, two science labs, a Musical Arts Center, the Learning Enhancement Center, and spectacular common spaces.

The new lobby of Hurwitz Hall sports Ohio's first iGlobe, which projects high definition video images of Earth on an animated 3D spherical screen. The 2nd and 3rd grade commons is bigger and better incorporating a skylight ceiling and a fabrication area made from wood from Reclaimed Cleveland, cofounded by 1991 graduate Deej Lincoln.
As part of the project, both the White Garden and the EcoGarden were redesigned and relocated, and the former Link has been transformed into the Musical Arts Center.
"It's truly astounding," commented Lower School Director Brad Gill. "The new building will inspire our teachers and enhance student learning in so many ways. And the fact that it came to fruition with such care and attention from our donors, architects and builders is very special, indeed."
