Hawken Receives Award from A Better Chance

Hawken School was recognized with A Better Chance’s Access Award at a May member school breakfast at Case Western Reserve University.
The award, presented by Sandra Timmons, A Better Chance president, is given to member schools who have graduated over 50 Better Chance scholars.

There have been 92 Better Chance graduates at Hawken School.

A Better Chance is a national, New York based organization, founded in 1963 with a mission to substantially increase educational access for students of color.

“The need for access to quality education is greater than ever,” Timmons explains on its website. “Gaps in academic achievement based on race continue … This lack of educational access results in an inadequate pipeline of diverse leaders at the highest levels.”

A Better Chance’s College Preparatory Schools Program annually recruits, refers and supports approximately 500 Better Chance Scholars at more than 300 of the nation’s leading boarding, day and public schools.
