Induction Ceremony Recognizes Academic Excellence

The Upper School gathered on April 25 to induct new members of the Cum Laude Society, recognizing academic achievement for the purpose of promoting excellence (Areté), justice (Diké) and honor (Timé).

 

The Society allows for inducting 20% of the senior class, 10% of whom may become members in their junior year. A faculty selection committee evaluates students for “academic excellence, a passion for learning and the highest standards of educational ethics and school citizenship.”

The program began with a breathtaking rendition of the Piano Trio in D Minor by Anton Arensky, performed by Arthur Erlendsson ’13 on piano, Gabe Napoli ’13 on violin, and Benjamin Franciso ’13 on cello. Click here to listen to their performance.

 

The ceremony then honored students inducted into the society last year, and welcomed 19 new students to the society. Click here for those a list of inductees.

 

1975 Hawken graduate Jonathan Silver gave an inspiring address to the audience of parents, student, faculty and administrators. A Visiting Distinguished Senior Fellow at Third Way, a Washington, DC-based think tank, Mr. Silver headed the federal government's investments in clean and renewable energy, managing a $50 billion fund which underwrote some of the largest energy projects in the world and served as senior policy advisor to three different Cabinet Secretaries.
