Park Design Project Kicks Off in Sixth Grade Math

On Monday, January 28th, Mr. Jeff Filarski, Professional Engineer for the City of Lyndhurst, gave Hawken's sixth grade math classes an overview of all the steps involved to take an idea, such as a park design, from thought to reality. The students will be working with the city to develop a plan for the Acacia Golf Course that was recently purchased by the Cuyahoga Land Conservancy and donated to the Cleveland Metroparks.

The students examined a topographical map, calculated the number of square feet on the property, and learned that deed restrictions, safety, economy, ecology, aesthetics, and versatility must be considered when creating a public park. The class hopes to schedule a site visit to see the 120 acre expanse and the wetlands, elevations, and other natural features they may wish to preserve as part of their design.

Students will begin their designs in February, and submit them to the Lyndhurst City Council, along with a letter proposing that their design should be selected based on the benefits it brings to the city. Good Luck to all students as they use their geometry skills to undertake this experiential project!

Thanks to math teacher, Mrs. Pam Richmann, for news of the engineer's visit and for this inspired project.
