Fall 2012 Intensives Conclude

Mathematicians analyzed chess moves, designers brought fabric creations to life, students gathered oral histories in Little Italy, and songwriters journeyed to Nashville's historic Ryman Auditorium. These are but a few of the authentic and life-changing experiences that engaged Upper School students as they immersed themselves in three weeks of experiential learning during Hawken's fall 2012 intensives.

 

Made possible by the Upper School’s unique course schedule, students took just one class during the three weeks, a format designed to enhance understanding by enabling students to experience and reflect on their topic with greater breadth and depth. Courses were based at the Gates Mills campus, and Hawken's Gries Center in University Circle. 

 

The all-day long format enabled classes to take trips in Cleveland and beyond. The Robotics class visited the Cleveland Clinic where they performed a simulation exercise on a surgical robot under the guidance of oncology surgeon Dr. Pedro Escobar. The Environmental Studies class traveled to the Eleuthra Islands to study how human impact alters systems that have been formed over millions of years. The French 3 Honors class traveled to Quebec to immerse themselves in French language and culture.

The cost of Intensives and associated trips is included in Hawken's tuition, ensuring that every student receives a variety of local and nonlocal experiences during their Upper School years.

The intensive schedule also allowed instructors to host special guests such as Congressman David Joyce who addressed the Public Opinion in American Politics class. Thomas Mulready of coolcleveland.com visited the 11th grade English class to talk about video storytelling.  And Noelle Celeste, publisher of Edible Cleveland led a panel during the 9th grade humanities course called You are What You Eat.
