Four Prizes Awarded in Third Annual STEMM Research Symposium

Hawken flexed its academic muscle on Monday, November 14, as 17 students took part in the third annual Bob Maciunas STEMM Research Symposium presented their projects before nine distinguished judges. The event featured three student presentations, and a keynote address by Dr. Nikolai Sopko Ph.D., followed by the judging of the student projects.

Sydney Costantini '13 earned first place for her project "The effectiveness of screening and decolonization of Staphylococcus aureus in preventing post-operative wound infections following pediatric heart surgery." Surya Khadilkar '12 took second place with "Use of PCR to understand the link between chronic infection and distance from costal regions of Kenya." Tied for third was Kate Anagnostos '13, "A developmental shift in NMDA receptor subunit composition modulates respiratory drive" and Sigal Landau '13, "Epidermal growth factor receptor protein expression in U87 wild type cells."
