Art of the State: Pennsylvania is recognized as the official, statewide, juried competition for Pennsylvania artists. 157 works were selected from over 2,000 entries for this year`s exhibit by a distinguished panel of jurors in five categories including painting, works on paper, sculpture, crafts and photography. "The 42nd annual Art of the State exhibit will provide a showcase for artists across the state and allow visitors of The State Museum to view the work of many talented artists," said Barbara Franco, executive director of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, which oversees The State Museum. "This isa wonderful opportunity for the establishedor emerging artist to exhibit their work and receive statewide recognition." Berman`s painting "Looking Backwards" is part of a multi-media project entitled "Elizavetgrad: I Remember" in which the artist himself is a symbol of a historic past; namely 20th Century immigration in America. Berman`s painting deals with ideas of passage and dissonance between past and present, what belongs inside and what belongs outside implicit in the American immigrant`s experience. The project includes oil paintings, works on paper, photographs and a short film. Before embarking on a career as an artist, Berman spent 20 years in law and business, first as a real estate attorney in Montgomery County, PA and then as the founder and president of HSK & Company, a private investment company. In 1998, to continue his undergraduate major at Brown University in the Classics and languages, Berman enrolled in the Studio for Advanced Studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Subsequently, Berman became an adjunct Professor of Art History at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia as well as the Assistant Men`s and Women`s Squash Coach at the University of Pennsylvania, where he coached the Women`s Team to an NCAA Division I National Championship. Since then, Berman has exhibited his artwork in several local and national juried exhibitions. Berman was awarded the 2008 Richard M. and Elaine Rieser Prize in the 51st Chautauqua National Exhibition of American Art by Rachel Vancelette, Director of Barbara Gladstone Gallery in New York City. Art of the State: Pennsylvania 2009 will be the featured event at the State Museum of Pennsylvania during Harrisburg`s Annual Gallery Walk on September 13th.
