Siblings Score Big at History Day Competition

jb
Out of thousands of competitors, Hannah `08 and Timothy `09 Miller earned a bronze medal at the National History Day contest held at the University of Maryland in June. The two won for a group performance about the conflict over the United States` response to the Armenian Tragedy of the early 20th century, where at least one million Armenians were subject to one of history`s worst genocides. Hannah and Timothy pored over research materials and ultimately created a 10-minute presentation that addressed President Woodrow Wilson`s unwillingness to become involved in Turkey, also known in the early 1900s as the Ottoman Empire, then-U.S. Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire Henry Morgenthau`s personal conflict over the tragedy and the conflict among the American missionaries, who were witnesses to the genocide. It is estimated that some half million students compete in the National History Day competition at a district level. Hannah and Tim were among the top two competitors in Ohio and then, at nationals, bested 70 group performances from students across the country to earn the top-three win. Though Timothy has one more year left at Hawken, Hannah ended her high school career with this final accomplishment. She will attend Syracuse University in the fall.
