Middle School Math Students Measure Up!

jb
Students at Hawken Middle School are making their mark in math and have had numerous opportunities to shine in a wide spectrum of competitive events. Most recently, 30 students from all three grade levels, stretched their capabilities by attending training sessions for Mathcounts, a rigorous contest open to a select group of students who must prove their skills in both individual and team events. The team of Shang-Shang Chen, Russell Cohen, Aric Floyd, and Elliot Glazer took first in the regional tournament in February at Cleveland State University. Last Saturday, these students represented Hawken at the state level in Columbus. Of the top 16 teams, the students placed 10th in the state while, out of 194 students, Elliot Glazer was 19th, and Russell Cohen ranked 27th. Go Hawks! Congratulations to these talented mathematicians, who will hopefully, along with many others, enter the program next year and make Mathcounts a Hawken hallmark. Also on the horizon, the math department will recognize several students for their outstanding performance on the Ohio Mathematics League Contest this past February. This event required students to answer 40 questions in a 30-minute period in the classroom. The sixth grade class, with an overall score of 165, placed third in the league statewide and second in Cuyahoga County. Earning a ninth place standing statewide was Shang-Shang Chen! The seventh grade class also achieved an overall score of 165, earning a 13th place standing in the state. Russell Cohen was the first-place student with a perfect score of 40, a rare phenomenon in this competitive event. Accolades to the sixth and seventh graders on a fine show of mathematical skill! Finally, the Continental Mathematics League has just concluded the fifth and last round of problem solving. The results are in, and we have three National Student Leaders! The students who maintained a perfect score on all five rounds are sixth graders Elliot Glazer and Aric Floyd and seventh grader, Sydney Costantini.
