Sixth Grader is First Hawken Student Accepted to MathPath

richmann
Hawken sixth grader Elliot Glazer has long been known by his peers and teachers as a profoundly gifted student of mathematics. He has earned many awards in competitive mathematics throughout the year, but perhaps the most prestigious of these is his recent admission to the MathPath program. MathPath is a four-week summer camp at the University of Vermont for students who exhibit extraordinary talent, tenacity, and a love of mathematics. To apply, Elliot had to complete a qualifying test by working through problems that, in many cases, took several days to solve. He also had to articulate his thinking in writing. Elliot was one of about 500 students who applied to the camp, where only 75-90 students will be accepted. The mission of the camp program is to enrich the mathematical knowledge and skills of students age 11-14, rather than to accelerate these middle school students into high school level courses, a philosophy which supports the developmental approach to teaching that is endorsed by current research and practiced at Hawken School.
