Award-Winning Author to Visit Hawken

jb
In celebration of Children`s Book Week, Doreen Rappaport will visit the Lyndhurst campus on Monday, November 12 for an experience that is sure to inspire and encourage. In 1965 when Doreen Rappaport went to teach a freedom school in McComb, Mississippi, she says the experience opened her eyes to the struggle of African Americans, who perserved in the face of considerable adversity. \"Their courage inspired me. They were heroic,\" she says. The people she did meet only had to be but a pittance in comparison to the actual numbers of \"unknown heroes\" who were symbols of victory in the midst of eras of strife and seeming defeat, Rappaport thought. So, she made it her life`s mission to \"recover and write about this `lost` history.\" For 17 years, she`s written and published award-winning children`s books that honor the struggles and triumphs of men, women and children who lived through, the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement, the Holocaust among many others. Check back to read about her visit with grades 1-5.
