Debate team state champs in policy debate

The four-person team of juniors Jim Goldston and Michael Laks and sophomores Drew Macklis and Dylan Herts recently won the state championship in policy debate in Boardman, Ohio. Senior Kenan Diab was a quarter-finalist in Lincoln Douglas Debate and junior Sam Skove a semi-finalist in Oratorical Interpretation in the same competition. Other competitors were junior Bryn Adams in Dramatic Interpretation, juniors Mona Ascha and Phillip Lee in International Extemporaneous Speaking and junior Maddie Strohl in US Extemporaneous Speaking. Hawken has a long tradition of debate excellence; this season was no exception. Here`s a look at a brief timeline of this season`s highlights on the road to the state championship: North Coast District National Forensic League Tournament Berea High School February 16-17 - Diab places in the top two in Lincoln Douglas Debate qualifying for the state tournament and the national tournament in Derby/Wichita, Kansas, June 17-22. He also qualifies for the district championship debate at the City Club on March 16, joining a long list of Hawks who`ve appeared at the Club and nationals. Hawken has been represented at the both nationals and the City Club nearly every year since 1999. - Junior Angela Primbas places fifth in Lincoln Douglas Debate; junior Nate Dickey-White places seventh. - Hawken wins the John Haight trophy for the best school overall in Lincoln Douglas. - Phillip Lee places fifth in International Extemp, qualifying for states. - Junior Ann Jaskiw places sixth in International Extemp. Ohio School High School Speech League District Tournament Olmstead Falls High School February 2-3 - The policy debate team - Laks, Goldston, Macklis and Herts - qualifies as well as Skove in Oratorical Interpretation, Adams in Dramatic Interpretation, Ascha in International Extemp and Strohl in US Extemp. - Overall, Hawken places third.
