In an athletic contest reminiscent of the infamous Winter Squamish match of 1966, Hawken students witnessed an event that will long be remembered by all. The Junior Class of 2008 women challenged the Senior Class of 2007 women to a 7 on 7 flag football game. Teams were organized and two-a-day practices were held under the watchful eyes of coaches carefully chosen from the ranks of the Varsity Football team. Both teams sported special uniforms for the match, with the juniors choosing navy blue, and the seniors choosing hot pink. Even English teacher Peter Scott was seen in a navy blue uniform. The entire Upper School student body, faculty, staff dropped what they were doing to fill the lawn in front of Ireland Hall. The field was marked off with orange cones, and there were even "official" referees garnered again from the Varsity football team. At times it was difficult to discern if the refs were coaches, players, or umpires. Downs and distance were loosely interpreted, but the cheering sections were operating on all cylinders. The juniors featured a troop of shirtless male specimens who led the crowd in cheers. The "Hawkman" was in evidence, as was a mysterious "Chickenman." Head of School, Scott Looney, and Associate Head of School, Monique DeVane, may have had second thoughts about their moves to Cleveland, but nevertheless thoroughly enjoyed the game. Upper School Head, Charlie Sachs `67, remarked that this match ranked "right up there" with the aforementioned Squamish match. The juniors scored first, while the seniors answered with two touchdowns in a row. With the crowd noise at ear splitting decibels, the juniors scored a touchdown to tie the game as time expired. To the great dismay of the assembled, there was no overtime period. Congratulations to the players, coaches, referees, fans, and the Hawkman for creating a most enjoyable afternoon. Is a rematch in the works? Stay tuned. - Birkett Gibson +óGé¼-£68
