Pathways Students Tour Case Law School, Cleveland Clinic

Through Hawken`s new Pathways Program, Upper School students were recently afforded extraordinary opportunities to personally experience the fields of law and medicine. On the morning of March 1, 10 students spent time at Case Western Reserve University School of Law speaking with two lawyers, a law professor, and the Dean of Case Law. The students had an hour-long open forum with Tim Casey and Harvey Bruner, both current Hawken parents, Gerald Korngold, a former Hawken parent, and Jocelyn Prewitt-Stanley, Hawken School Class of 1995. The panelists answered student questions and shared valuable advice on the field of law. When one student asked what she could do to stand-out as an applicant to law school, Jocelyn Prewitt-Stanley recommended to \"go outside your comfort zone,\" while Tim Casey said to \"seek out strange opportunities.\" After the open forum, Gerald Korngold, Dean of Case Law and Tim Casey, a Case Law professor, lead the students on a tour of the Law School. Gerald Korngold spoke to the students about the law school application process, while Tim Casey explained some of what life would be like as a law student. One student remarked that the morning at Case was \"very informative and helpful,\" and another was appreciative of the \"great information\" the panelists shared with the students. The Upper School students definitely benefited from the morning, and really enjoyed interacting with law professionals. On the morning of February 15, thirty students spent the morning with five doctors and surgeons at the Cleveland Clinic, three of whom are Hawken School parents, and one a Hawken School alumnus. For the morning at the Clinic, the students first toured different departments and went on rounds with Hawken parent Dr. Colleen Silva, a surgical oncologist who guided the students in a biopsy of a turkey breast with olives hidden inside, simulating a breast with cancerous tumors. Hawken parent Dr. Michael Silva, Jr., a vascular surgeon and the Vascular Surgery Department Chairman and Dr. Timur Sarac, a vascular surgeon, both spoke of the intricacies of vascular surgery. Hawken parent Dr. A. Marc Harrison, a Pediatric Critical Care Specialist, showed the students the inside of an ambulance, a pediatric operating room, and detailed two patient stories. The morning concluded with Dr. A. Marc Gillinov `80, a thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon. Students watched a live feed of heart surgery performed by Dr. Gillinov `80, and were able to ask him questions while he was in surgery; he also spent 30 minutes prior to surgery speaking with the students. The Cleveland Clinic tour made for a truly unforgettable experience. One student remarked that \"the opportunity was once-in-a-lifetime,\" while another said, \"I got to experience things I would never have been able to.\" Everyone agreed that they \"would love to do it again.\" Through these latest Pathways Programs, students can better guide their own unique path to becoming doctors, lawyers, or even law professors, after being \"educated about the fields and convinced that we can do it, too,\" as one student stated.
