Pathways Students Visit Case School of Medicine

pac
As part of Hawken`s new Pathways Program, a dozen Upper School students spent the morning on April 5 at Case Western Reserve University`s School of Medicine. A panel of four physicians and researchers described their work and the passion they bring to it. The hour and a half open forum with biochemist Michael Weiss, Hawken Class of 1975; oral surgeon Eric Fried; pediatrician Bobbie Baetz-Greenwalt; and world health specialist Charles King (all Hawken parents) gave the students the opportunity to hear about the pathway that led the panelists to medicine and to ask several questions. When asked about deciding on a specialty during med school, Dr. Weiss recommended that the students \"be open to new experiences and opportunities.\" Dr. Baetz-Greenwalt reiterated this feeling, encouraging a liberal arts background while urging students \"not be so focused that they miss out on a variety of classes.\" Having all shared that a desire to \"change the world\" led them to become doctors, they agreed that, for them, being a doctor is more a calling than a job. Students remarked that the morning was \"very informative and helpful,\" as it was great to \"hear more about all the different areas of study within medicine.\" Appreciative of the time and information that the panelists shared, the students certainly benefited from the morning, and really enjoyed meeting the doctors.
