Hawken Debaters Excel at National Tournament

Two members of Hawken School`s Speech and Debate Team placed in the top 20 in Lincoln-Douglas Debate at the National Forensic League National Speech Tournament in Philadelphia, PA on June 13-17, 2005. Hawken School was the only high school in the nation to have two debaters finish in the top 20. Out of 217 Lincoln-Douglas debaters competing in the tournament, Sarah Baley `05 made it through 11 rounds of the 15-round tournament, finishing in the top 20 and Michael Jaskiw `05 made it to the semifinal round, placing fourth in the nation. The National Forensic League National Speech Tournament was started in 1931 to promote speech, debate and oratory skills in high school students. Students qualify for the national tournament in district competitions held in the spring.
