Former Hawken Parent Featured on "60 Minutes"
Hawken former parent Dr. Eric Topol, was recently featured as an expert on the Vioxx situation on CBS` "60 Minutes". Dr. Topol, chief of cardiovascular medicine at the Cleveland Clinic, was Merck`s first and most persistent critic. In 2001, he conducted a statistical analysis of all the available data on Vioxx, and his study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. According to Topol, the study showed a very substantial risk of heart attacks and strokes. Since that time, Merck has pulled Vioxx off the market, and recently was found liable and fined $250 million in damages for the death of a man who took Vioxx.
