5th and 6th Graders Excel in Math Competition

On Saturday May 7, three teams of fifth graders and three teams of sixth graders participated in the GCCTM math competition, where their hard work and diligence were evident in their performance. Both grades earned two blue ribbons and one trophy award. The competition included four categories: Problem Solving, Pile of Ten, Mental Math, and Team Construction. The Problem Solving and Pile of Ten portions contained word problems requiring each group to apply strategies to obtain the correct answer. The Mental Math section required all students to listen attentively while manipulating the problems in their heads; this challenging section was also a favorite amongst the competitors. Team Construction required teams to analyze a set of directions and measurements, and to recreate them on a blank piece of paper. Instructors Lesley Reckart and Stephie Pascal encourage next years fifth and sixth graders to participate in the competition, which is a great way to enrich their math experience.
