Faculty Endeavors

Ever wonder how Hawken faculty members spend their leisure time? Some spent the past few months engrossed in professional development quests -- activities that will make a direct impact upon what happens in the classroom. Performing Arts Chair Dan Call spent one week in Canterbury, England living in the dorms of the King`s School and singing six hours a day. He was one of 150 singers from all over the world to participate in the program, which was sponsored by the Berkshire Choral Festival. Heather Williams, Upper School Spanish teacher, volunteered in El Salvador as an interpreter for social service projects sponsored by Episcopal Relief and Development. She also delivered over 100 Spanish-language books, which were donated by Hawken students, to two schools. Upper School French teacher Alan MacCracken `54 traveled to Paris, France for an immersion experience. He took photos of major landmarks, as well as lesser known landmarks that are referred to specifically in the French II readers Chemistry teachers Jesse Bernstein and Russ Maurer jointly presented a workshop at ChemEd 2005 in Vancouver, BC, Canada, entitled \"Inquiry Based Laboratory Experiments.\" The workshop, attended by science educators from across the U.S. and Canada, proposed labs for first-year and second-year chemistry students. And finally, Russ Maurer attended Summertrios, a chamber music camp organized by pianists, at Wilson College. He played with amateurs of varying skill levels and professional musicians. Maurer said: "The friendly, supportive environment for players of all levels reminded me a lot of what I value in Hawken. I cannot wait to attend next summer.
