Fifth Graders Get Charged about Energy

Fifth graders were treated to an Energy Carnival presented by the Middle School Energy Club on Thursday, February 4th. Club Advisor Peter Thomas explained to the assembled students that the point of the carnival was to “have fun and learn.” And from all reports, they did both.

Students were divided into six groups, aptly named uranium, petroleum, wind, coal, solar, and hydro power. After being introduced to some basic information about renewable and non-renewable energy, electricity, and energy efficiency, the groups rotated to six different stations that featured games and activities including Energy Pictionary, Energy Knockdown, Fishin’ for Energy, Energy Equations, Energy Taboo, and Top Five. Several student volunteers also enjoyed demonstrating how pedaling a bicycle can create enough friction to power a boom box and illuminate a light bulb.
