Fall Elective to 'Dig' Into Cleveland History

As Hawken readies for the opening of the new Sally & Bob Gries Center at University Circle, history and humanities teachers Ken Clark and Jim Newman, respectively, will lead a class of students on an archaeological dig and a look back at how Clevelanders lived in the early 20th century, near the time when Hawken was founded and when the Magnolia Drive mansion (the site of the Gries center) was a residence.

Through research, reading and analysis of period literature and documents, trips to University Circle institutions, interviews and an archeological dig on the grounds of Hawken's newly purchased property, students will work with an archaeologist from Cuyahoga Community College and a professor from Cleveland State University to piece together a patchwork of urban life in the 1900s.  The class will also occasionally host and teach students from the Lyndhurst.

It is hoped that through the class's efforts a collection of artifacts will be gathered for display and a series of articles will be written and locally published about the historical findings.
