Spot the Checkerspot!
First organic gardens. Now butterfly habitats. Only time will tell what's next as Hawken plays its role in environmental sustainability.
Eleven Hawken students recently planted some 475 plants at the Upper School in an effort to restore the habitat for the rare Harris Checkerspot butterfly.
Emily '10 and Amanda '08 Weatherhead, Courtney Tumbush '09, Dani Galluci '10, Spencer Hobson '10, Michael Marabito '10, Chelsea Mihelich '10, Amanda Moore '10, Becky Raskind '10, Lauren Sedlak '10 and Priya Sharma '10 were all a part of the team working to plant the garden around the retention pond near the athletic complex, clearing the site of debris and installing butterfly boxes as well as planting the hundreds of plant "plugs."
A sign detailing the purpose of the garden, identifying the plant life (which includes flat-topped aster, swamp milkweed, black-eyed susan, great blue lobelia, wild bergamot, blue vervain, and yellow coneflower) and the various types of butterflies that may live among the plants, when in bloom, can be found at the site as well.
When established, the garden will be awash in native Ohio wildflowers and shades of yellow, lavender, purple, white, and pink from June to October.
The project was funded in part by a grant that Emily Weatherhead received this winter from the Ohio Division of Wildlife to stave off an extinction of the Harris Checkerspot Butterfly. The species of butterly is dwindling largely because its habitat is shrinking, and Hawken's garden will provide the only food source for the caterpillar that eventually becomes the Harris Checkerspot. The project was also supported by funds from Save Our Stream, another Hawken-based environmental activist group, and Praxair, an international maker of atmospheric, process and specialty gases.
