Birchwood Students Rally Again for their Cleveland Neighbors

Each year Birchwood School of Hawken’s first grade students spearhead a schoolwide Thanksgiving Food Drive for their Cleveland neighbors. For the 14th year, Mrs. Sprau, Mrs. Mamone, and Mrs. Higginbotham helped their first grade classes coordinate with the Bountiful Basement Hunger Center, located adjacent to the school, to be a strength and an encouragement to Cleveland families in need. This year the Birchwood community broke their own school record and donated 2,178 items.

The volunteers at the Bountiful Basement were thankful for the donations, which were used to make Thanksgiving dinner packages for approximately 500 families in the area.

Woven into the curriculum at Birchwood is the belief that personal character can become the most vital factor in the success and fulfillment of an adolescent. Emphasis on character development and habit formation is rooted in Birchwood’s philosophy about human nature. Beginning in the early grades Birchwood students are taught that they have a responsibility to themselves and to those in their communities.
