Dr. James A. Doull, Jr. ’42 
Passed away on March 23, 2021.
 
Jim attended Hawken School and Western Reserve Academy before attending Yale University at the age of 17 during the accelerated wartime program. He enlisted in the United States Army and served with the 8th Army division occupation force in Kobe, Japan during World War II. Jim finished his degree at Yale in 1950. He then attended the University of Virginia Medical School and graduated in 1954.
 
Jim pursued his medical training at Case Western Reserve University in internal medicine and psychiatry. He was an associate clinical professor at Case Western University School of Medicine, managed a private practice, and was a member of the Cleveland Psychoanalytic Center.
 
He was predeceased by his parents, James A. Doull and Ethel Mary MacQuarrie, and his wife, Bettie Mae Fleshman. Jim is survived by his children, Elizabeth Doull Wright, James A. Doull III MD ’78, Gregory H. Doull MD ’79, and Rebecca Doull Dameron MD; eight grandchildren; and two nephews.
 

Leigh H. Perkins ’43
Passed away on May 6, 2021.
 
Leigh came to Hawken School in the second grade and went on to attend Forman School. He graduated from Williams College in 1950.
 
Leigh began his career as a rodman on a survey crew in the iron mines of northern Minnesota and then became a salesman for Harris Calorific. He purchased The Orvis Company in 1965 and built it into one of the country’s most respected sporting, apparel, and dog brands. In 1999, Leigh wrote his autobiography, “A Sportsman’s Life: How I Built Orvis by Mixing Business and Sport. Together.”
 
Leigh is the founder of the Orvis-Perkins Foundation. In 1992, he received the Chevron Conservation Award, and in 2016, he was named Sportsman of Year by Bonefish and Tarpon Trust.
 
Leigh is survived by his wife, Anne; children Leigh H. Perkins, Jr. ’71, David Perkins, Molly Perkins, and Melissa McAvoy; stepchildren Penny Mesic, Annie Ireland, and Jamie Ireland; grandchildren Simon Perkins, Charley Perkins, Hannah Perkins, Molly Perkins, Jake Perkins, Leigh Perkins ’18, Spencer McAvoy, Emma McAvoy, Ralph McAvoy, Melissa Mesic Marshall, and James Mesic; and three great-grandchildren.
 

Peter C. Wykoff ’48
Passed away on July 12, 2021.
 
After completing his studies at Hawken School, Peter attended University School. He earned a B.A. from Amherst College in 1955. Peter was a second lieutenant in the Air Force before graduating from the Case Western Reserve Law School in 1961.
 
Peter joined the trust department at Union Trust before practicing law with Calfee, Halter & Griswold. He retired in 2001 from National City Bank after more than four decades of administering trusts. He volunteered with Junior Achievement and was a member of the Cleveland Skating Club, Rockwell Springs Trout Club, Deep Springs Trout Club, The Cleveland Museum of Natural History Trout Club, The Rowfant Club, and the former Cleveland Athletic Club.
 
Peter was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Thompson Wykoff, and his siblings, Mary Louise Sangdahl and Thomas Wykoff ’48. He is survived by his sons, John David Wykoff and William Scott Wykoff, and four grandchildren.
 

Michael A. Clegg ’53 
Passed away on April 6, 2021.
 
Mike attended Hawken School from grades 1 through 8 and then went to Choate Rosemary Hall. He graduated from Yale University. While at Yale, he was a member of The Bachelors, one of the University’s a cappella singing groups.
 
He began his career working for IBM. He then ran Ostendorf-Morris’ property management group and became president and an owner of the company.
 
Mike served on the boards for Cuyahoga County Board of Mental Retardation and Development, MetroHealth Foundation, and Cleveland Foundation. He volunteered with Our Lady of the Wayside and North Coast Community Homes. He was one of the founding family members of the Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland and a co-founder of the Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland Pro-Am. 
 
Mike was predeceased by his wife, Susan. He is survived by his children, Chris Clegg, Tracy Clegg Philbin, and Scott Clegg; four grandchildren; siblings; and Donna Moffly and Lee Clegg.
 

Martin W. Feller ’65
Passed away on May 15, 2021.
 
Marty entered Hawken School in the first grade and graduated as a lifer. While at the Upper School, he played football and baseball. He scored the winning run against University School in Hawken’s first-ever high school baseball win against its rival. He went on to attend Brown University where he also played on the baseball team.
 
As a young boy, Marty would travel with his family to Arizona to spend weeks at the Cleveland Indians spring training camp, where his father was on the pitching staff.
 
Marty is survived by his brothers, Steve Feller ’60 and Bruce Feller ’68; nephew, Daniel Feller; and many cousins.
 

Scott B. Hayes, Jr. ’71 
Passed away on January 10, 2021.
 
After attending Hawken School through eighth grade, Scott went to the Hotchkiss School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
 
Scott was a manager at the Last Moving Picture Company in Cleveland from 1976 to 1980. He then joined the Paine Webber brokerage for several years until shifting gears in 1984 to manage a bar and grill in New Canaan, CT. In 1990, he then moved to Sarasota to pursue his passion for sports as the co-host of a local call-in television show and then as co-host of the Scott & Jake Show.
 
Scott is survived by his brothers, James ’73, Timothy ’76, and Michael ’79; five nephews; and a niece. He was predeceased by his parents, Dorothy Deborah Walter Hayes and Scott B. Hayes.
 

Dana E. Stokes ’72 
Passed away on April 22, 2021.
 
Dana was a Commencement speaker for the Class of 1972. He worked as a filmmaker and a stagehand.
 
He is survived by his wife, Helen James Stokes, and daughter, Elizabeth James Stokes. 
 

Betsy J. Rippner ’79
Passed away on June 2, 2021.
 
While a student at Hawken, Betsy was a member of the softball, field hockey, volleyball, and basketball teams. She was also involved in various clubs including Hawken Players’ Society, Chorus, and the Onyx. She earned her B.A. at the University of Michigan and then attended graduate school at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
 
Betsy taught social studies to middle school students at Mt. Abraham Union Middle/High School.
 
She is survived by her daughter, Sophie; siblings, Stacey and Dan; and parents, Lynda and Paul Rippner.
 

Elisabeth Gibans ’80
Passed away June 18, 2021.
 
Beth attended Hawken Upper School and was honored with the Charles B. Bolton Award during her senior year. She was also a member of the field hockey and softball teams. She earned a degree from the University of Michigan.
 
Beth practiced sustainable agriculture in Costa Rica, The Land Institute in Kansas, and the Agroecology program in Santa Cruz. She and her business partner established Sauvie Island Organics in Portland, and for the last 20 years, she owned and managed Backyard Gardens in Joseph, Oregon.
 
Beth was the daughter of Nina Freedlander and James Gibans and the sister of Amy McGlashan ’78, David, and Jonathan ’76.
 

David Wasserstrom ’85
Passed away on May 19, 2021.
 
David was a Hawken lifer. While at the Upper School, he was a member of the soccer team. He earned a BA from the University of Denver.
 
He was the content director for Marcum LLP and the president of Vantage Communications. An award-winning journalist, his work appeared in numerous publications, including Crain’s Cleveland Business, Cleveland Magazine, and Inside Business.
 
David served on the board of Breakthrough Schools, Milestones Autism Resources, and Jewish Big Brothers and Big Sisters. He was also a former class agent at Hawken School.
 
David is survived by his parents, Philip and Peggy Wasserstrom; sisters, Amy Cummings and Katie Shames ’78; and nephews, Jonathan Shames ’08 and Jack Cummings.
 

Edward C. Pembroke III ’92
Passed away on July 21, 2021.
 
While a student at Hawken School, Ed was a member of the Hawken Players’ Society as well as the basketball and soccer teams. He matriculated to Bowling Green State University.
 
Ed was the son of Evelyn Pembroke and the late Edward C. Pembroke II and the brother of Earl Pembroke, Erica Young, and Eileen Mills.
 

Glenn R. Brown, Jr.
Passed away on May 16, 2021.
 
Glenn was a former trustee of Hawken School having served on the Board from 1993 until 2002. During that time, he was a member of the Technology and Education and Student Life Committees as well as chairman of the Buildings and Grounds Committee.
 
He graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a BS in chemical engineering and completed an MS and Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the Case Institute of Technology. Glenn joined the research division of the Standard Oil Company and rose to senior vice president, technology and planning, and member of the Board of Directors. Upon retirement, he became the director of strategic planning at Case Western Reserve University. Glenn led the effort to merge the faculties of Case Institute of Technology and Western Reserve College. He was the first dean of the colleges of the combined faculties. He then became vice provost for corporate research and technology transfer. In 1996, Glenn was nominated by the OHIO Business Roundtable to become the first formal science and technology advisor to Governor George Voinovich. He then went on to become president of the Generation Foundation.
 
He served on many non-profit boards, including United Way, American Red Cross, Cleveland Clinic Innovations Advisory Board, Greater Cleveland Literacy Coalition, Cleveland Advanced Manufacturing Program, Industrial Advisory Board at MetroHealth, Playhouse Square Foundation, and the Campaign Committee for Case Western Reserve University.
 
He received many awards throughout his life including the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Penn State University; honorary doctorates from Kent State University and Cleveland State University; the President’s Award for Distinguished Alumni from the Case School of Engineering; the Distinguished Service Award from the Cleveland Technical Societies Council, and the Peter Berg Regional Leadership Award from TeamNEO.
 
Glenn is survived by his wife, Jeanette G. Brown; children, Robyn L. Boebinger and Eric R. Brown; grandchildren, Carolyn A. Odom, Charles W Boebinger, and Michael J Boebinger.
 

Adam Chenoweth
Passed away on August 16, 2020.
 
Adam was the stepfather of Hawken student Logan Rose Haberny ’26. He was the owner and operator of AGC Enterprises.
 
In addition to his stepdaughter, Adam is survived by his wife, Renee Singley-Chenoweth; parents, Ronald Chenoweth and Debrah Prohaska; and sister, Emily Croyle.
 

Vicki Kennedy (Koeblitz)
Passed away on July 17, 2021.
 
Vicki was deeply involved in the life of the Hawken School for many years, having enrolled four children at Hawken – Erin Ginsburg ’98, Katie Koeblitz ’05, Billy Koeblitz ’06, and Annie Koeblitz ’09. She was ever-present in the School's hallways as a volunteer and a mother. Vicki held several leadership positions in the Parents’ Association, culminating in serving as president from 2004 through 2006, during which time she served on the Board of Trustees. Her involvement at Hawken was also seen in the classroom, on field trips, attending events, and working on several auctions for Hawken. The School acknowledged Vicki’s outstanding service by naming her a Fellow in 2015.
 
Vicki and her mother co-owned Palermo Florist. After selling the shop, she dedicated her time to her growing family. With an eye for styling, she spent two decades in the fashion industry. Most recently, Vicki was employed by the Cindy Halle boutique.
 
In addition to her children, Vicki is survived by her partner, Ronald H. Krasney; grandchildren, Owen Ginsburg ’32 and Zoe Ginsburg ’36; siblings, Shawn Kennedy, Daren Kennedy, and Julie Austin; and mother, Marilyn Kennedy. She was preceded in death by her father, James R. Kennedy.
 

P.K. Saha
Passed away in August 2021.
 
P.K. was an Upper School English and history teacher from 1957 until 1962. After leaving Hawken, he pursued a doctorate in English and linguistics and then taught at Case Western Reserve University for 30 years before retiring in 1994. A prolific writer, P.K. wrote 50 poems, stories, and anthologies.
 
He is survived by his wife Ginger.
 

Robert Tupta
Passed away in May 2021.
 
Robert worked in the Hawken Admission Office from 1970 until 1978. He was also a trust officer with Key Corp.
 
He leaves behind his wife, Mary; sons, Bob, Jim, Chris, Jeff, Frank ’03, and Eric, daughters, Anne, Rosemary, and Michaela; and 14 grandchildren.
